MEDIA CENTER CLASSES
Class Sign-up
Please request space and assistance at least 1 school day in advance using the online Media Center Calendar or in person with the Media Specialist. A calendar request is made via the Media Center website. Reservations are complete when confirmed in writing. Scheduling space in the media center is an art, not a science. Occasionally a physical space is available, but because of other activities in the Media Center, the Media Specialist may propose an alternative plan to accomodate your needs.
Classes are invited to schedule regular visits to the computer lab. However, a class can visit every 2-3 weeks, but not every week. It is not physically possible to schedule weekly visits for as many classes as we have.
Classes doing occasional projects may schedule for 2-3 consecutive days.
The Media Specialist is your instructional partner. She is excited to work with whole classes, small groups and individuals regarding Information Literacy, research, search strategies, using the e-books and databases, selecting a book choices and many other topics.
Student Procedures for Entering the Media Center
Students should enter quietly with respect for others already in the Media Center. Food and drinks should not be brought in.
Students are not to move chairs unless they have permission and move those chairs back at the end of class.
Voices should be audible to those at the same table or next to you-- not across the room.
Dismissal Procedures
Dismissal is by teacher, NOT by the bell.
Five minutes before the end of the class period:
Clean your area. Pick up paper and other trash. Return materials to their places.
Have students pass through the security system one at a time, at normal walking pace.
If the theft detection device beeps, the student must re-enter the Media Center and come to the Circulation Desk.
Orientation, Book Talks, Lessons
At the beginning of each year, your Media Specialist will give students a Media Center orientation through the Language Arts classes. After that orientation session, a variety of lessons are available.

Tips for Media Center Success:
Use a seating chart for Media Center computer use and table seating .
Assign specific research topics.
Positive example: Use 2-column notes to research 6 topics about the life of 1 Dorothea Lange.
Negative example: Research the life of a famous American photographer.
Supervise your students in the Media Center. The teacher must be present the entire time the class is in the Media Center.
Positive example: Circulate among your students, making sure they stay quiet and on task.
Negative example: Sitting to grade papers while your students search for resources or use computers.
Share your lesson plans with your media specialist in advance.
Working together for the best utilization of Media Center resources saves your students time and frustration.
Do not allow students to print information they should take notes on.
Instead, have students take notes. (Students with visual learning disabilities may be an exception.)
Substitute teachers are not permitted to bring classes to the Media Center.
Media Center Restroom
The Media Center restroom is for adults only.
When students in the Media Center need to use the restroom, they must ask you to sign a pass so they can go to a student restroom.
Media Center Displays of Student Work
We have several areas ideal for student displays, and want to display your students’ work in the Media Center. Please realize we cannot guarantee against loss or damage of displayed materials.
---------------
Sending Students to the Media Center
Media Center Passes
Classroom teachers may send up to 5 students to the Media Center using Media Center passes. These passes are Goldenrod in color. Each student must have an individual pass (this eliminates the molecule effect when one leaves your room, but 4 names and bodies arrive in the Media Center with your pass).
On the pass, SPECIFY WHY THE STUDENT IS COMING TO THE MEDIA CENTER. Please write passes in INK and sign legibly. The Media Specialist may call your classroom to verify passes if there is a question.
Substitute teachers may send ONE student at a time to the media center.
If you run out of passes, please send a note, requesting more passes. Unless you send a note, new passes will be placed in your teacher mailbox.
Students may come to the Media Center during their lunch period ONLY with a pass.
Student Sign-In Sheet
Students entering the Media Center on passes must come to the Circulation Desk as soon as they enter, show their pass to the desk attendant, and fill out the Sign-in Log located in the middle center.
Computer "Free Time"
There is no computer “free time.” District policy states Internet access and computer use are for class assignments only. For further information go to the link Student Internet Use.
Student Behavior
In our Media Center, students are expected to enter quietly, walk normally, use a soft voice, and stay on task. If a student’s behavior is unacceptable, the Media Specialist will address the problem with the student. If problems continue, the Media Specialist will send students on passes back to class. Students must adhere to the school’s behavior policy in the Media center. If the problem is serious, the Media Specialist will contact SAO.

Library Books & Resources
Teacher Checkout
If you check out books for your classroom, supervise carefully at the end of EACH CLASS to be sure no books go out the door without your knowledge. Even the most professional, observant teachers find that classroom books “walk”. A good strategy is to count the books on your cart before any students use them. Ask a student to count the books before the end of the period and make sure they are all there.
Books may also be kept on Reserve in the Media Center. They will not be circulated to anyone for a specified amount of time (you decide) but will be available to all of your students to use in the Media Center.
If you receive an overdue notice, you can request the item(s) be renewed. If no other staff member has asked for the item, this will be done.
Student Checkout
Students may check out up to 4 books at a time, and keep them for 2 weeks. Students may renew books once.
Overdue Fines for Hillsborough County students are five cents/day. Fines accumulate over weekends and school holidays. Students are expected to return books on time.
Lost Books
Students will be charged replacement fees for lost books or stolen books. Current replacement fees are listed below.
Lost Book |
Replacement Cost |
Fiction - Hardback |
$15.00 |
Fiction - Paperback |
$10.00 |
Non-Fiction |
$25.00 |

Replacement Cost |
Students must give money/checks ONLY to the media specialist and not to substitutes or student assistants.
Student Overdue Notices
When you receive student overdue notices, please give them out to your Homeroom or 2nd period class. Notices will be labeled with the class period for whom they are intended.
If students say, “I returned that book already” that does not solve the student’s problem.
PLEASE SEND THE STUDENT TO TALK TO THE MEDIA SPECIALIST.
Reading Controversial Materials in Class
There is a difference between requring a specific title and requiring reading. Teachers are encouraged to work with the Media Specialist, Department Heads and Assistant Principal for Curriculum when selecting required titles for reading. The Media Center contains a wide variety of reading material and not every book is right for every reader. Sometimes this is because of content, and other times this is because of reading format, difficulty etc. Communication and options are key elements to helping students become life-long readers while at the same time respecting the diversity and range of cultures, beliefs and interests in our school community.
AV Library Collection
AV materials for teacher checkout are located in the media center work room. They are shelved by subject, according to the Dewey Decimal System, in non-fiction, fiction, and biography sections. Browse the collection or search for AV materials online using CyberCat . AV materials can be checked out to teachers only.
Professional Resources
Your media specialist or technology resource teacher will work with teachers one-on-one or in groups if you have questions about using media center software or equipment. Some frequently requested topics are: IDEAS Basic, IDEAS Advanced, Easy Grade Pro, Imbedding hyperlinks in online lessons, Rapid Web Design Basic and Advanced. Professional books and journals are also available for teachers and staff to use.

Links to these databases and other reliable online resources may be found on the media center web page on the Library Media Services 6-12 page. Please collaborate with your media specialist for recommended research resources and techniques.
Plagiarism by Students - Students should take notes from online reference resources to help create reports. Copying and pasting the text of a document is plagiarism and is considered cheating. The media specialist can be requested to teach a plagiarism class to students. For more about plagiarism, visit the Plagiarism.Org web site.

Equipment - Inventory
The school completes an equipment inventory at least once a year. 1-2 internal audits and 1 District Property Control audit.
In order to keep the school inventory list up to date and accurate there are some guidelines teachers should follow:
Equipment is assigned to rooms, not to teachers.
If you move from one room to another, do not take equipment from your old room to your newly assigned room. There will be equipment in the new room for you to use. If you do not have the all required equipment in the new room, go to your media specialist.
Equipment must not be moved without permission.
Email your principal or media specialist to get permission to move equipment BEFORE the equipment is moved.

The Paper Cutter Please work carefully. If you start with 10 fingers, please ensure you finish with the same! Close the blade after use.
The Poster Machine enlarges items 8 x 11 or smaller to poster size. The paper for the poster printer costs about $100 per roll so use this resource to make posters you intend to keep for an extended period of time. Departments will be charged per poster to defray the cost of paper.
Give your original document to your media specialist at least 2 days in advance.
Indicate whether the poster needs to be laminated: This determines the type of paper used.
The Laminating Machine covers items with a protective plastic film.
The Media Specialist and the Media Assistants do all laminating.
Allow 24 hours for laminiating as the machine is NOT always on.
WRITE YOUR NAME ON THE BACK OF EACH ITEM.

One machine sends students’ grades to the Assessment Office downtown. Scantron Achievement Series.
Each type of machine requires a different types of scantron bubble sheets.
The media center does not supply the bubble sheets.
